Cultural Heritage “Cvetan Grozdanov”

The Research Center for Cultural Heritage “Cvetan Grozdanov” was established in 2014. Its principal objective is to advance scholarly knowledge in art history and archaeology, particularly medieval art, the art of the late Middle Ages and the Revival period, as well as the art and material culture of antiquity on the territory of Macedonia. The results of the Center’s research projects are published in scholarly monographs and in its yearbook, MONUMENTA.

During the past two years, the Center carried out several research projects: The Fresco Painting of the Church of the Holy Mother of God Peribleptos (St. Clement) and the Art of the Archbishopric of Ohrid in the 13th–14th Centuries; Beliefs through Images in Stone in Antiquity in Macedonia – A Corpus of Monuments. Projects within inter-academy cooperation with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences included: The Debar and Samokov Schools of Icon Painting; From Paganism to Christianity.

The following projects are currently underway: Sculpture and Decorative Stonework in Antiquity in Macedonia, and Portraits of St. Jovan Vladimir in Balkan Art from the 17th to the 20th Century.

Over the past two years, the Center’s research activities have resulted in the publication of more than a dozen scholarly papers, most of them in international scientific journals. The research findings have also been presented at international and national scientific conferences.

In addition to research on cultural heritage, one of the Center’s principal objectives is to initiate and coordinate national research programs in cooperation with institutions in the Republic of Macedonia. The Center maintains continuous scholarly communication and cooperation with research centers and institutes in the region and worldwide, including joint research projects and exchanges of literature.

The Center engages one research associate and one scientific adviser.
