Research Center for Energy and Sustainable Development

The Research Center for Energy, Informatics and Materials was established as a scientific unit of MASA in 1986. The founder of the Center was Acad. Jordan Pop-Jordanov. In 2014, the Center was renamed the Research Center for Energy and Sustainable Development (RCESD). The Center’s Council is appointed by the Presidency of the Academy upon the proposal of the Department of Technical Sciences and consists of six members of the Academy from the working composition. The Center is headed by Acad. Gligor Kanevče. Four employees work at the Center: one scientific adviser, one senior research associate and two research associates. The Head of the Department for Administrative and Technical Support to MASA’s Departments and Centers, a position within the MASA Secretariat, also participates in the Center’s work.

RCESD initiates, coordinates and implements fundamental and applied research in the scientific fields within its scope. To date, 95 research projects have been carried out at the Center, involving numerous collaborators from the country and abroad. More than half of these projects have been financed from international sources, including the European Framework Programmes for Research and Technological Development (FP6 and FP7).

In addition to strictly scientific topics, the Center has also undertaken strategic projects of national character and vital importance to the country:

  •  Two energy development strategies for the Republic of Macedonia—one for the period 2010–2030 and the second for the period 2015–2035;
  • Strategy for the Utilization of Renewable Energy Sources in the Republic of Macedonia up to 2020;
  • Programme for the Implementation of the Energy Development Strategy of the Republic of Macedonia for the Period 2013–2017;
  • Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Climate Change Mitigation Analyses in the three National Communications on Climate Change and the First Biennial Update Report on Climate Change;
  • Analytical Support for Determining the Nationally Determined Contributions on Climate Change for the 2015 Paris Agreement;
  • Energy-Sector Modeling as Part of Analytical and Advisory Support for Green Growth and Climate Change.

Over the past two decades, researchers from the Center have published more than 450 scientific articles in international journals, as well as numerous papers in monographs and proceedings of international and national scientific and professional meetings, and have participated more than 100 times in scientific meetings across Europe, the Americas and Asia. Some of them serve on editorial boards of leading international scientific journals and on scientific committees of prestigious conferences.

RCESD cooperates with numerous foreign scientific institutions in the implementation of international projects and serves as Macedonia’s focal point for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It is also one of the founders of the Regional Group for Energy Planning and Energy-System Modeling, which includes teams from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia and Croatia. RCESD is recognized in the international research community as one of the organizers of the International Scientific Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (7th SDEWES Conference, Ohrid, 2012, with more than 250 participants from 45 countries) and the First SDEWES Conference for Southeast Europe (Ohrid, 2014, with more than 120 participants from 32 countries). The Center is the seat of the National Committee on Climate Change.
